Born in 1919 in the small town of Pittem, Belgium, Claerhout initially studied for the priesthood before pursuing his passion for art.
In 1946, he traveled to South Africa, where he spent the rest of his life.

Claerhout’s paintings are notable for their use of vibrant colors and bold, thick brushstrokes.

He often depicted rural scenes and farm life, drawing inspiration from the landscapes and people of South Africa.

His work also reflects his interest in traditional African culture and religion and his Catholic faith.

One of the most distinctive aspects of Claerhout’s work is his use of mixed media.

He often incorporated sand, cement, and enamel into his paintings, creating a unique texture and depth.

This technique, combined with his bold use of color, gives his paintings a distinctive, almost sculptural quality.

Claerhout’s work has been widely exhibited both in South Africa and internationally, and he is considered one of the country’s most influential artists.
In addition to his paintings, he was also a respected sculptor and printmaker.

He passed away in 2006 at 87, leaving behind a rich legacy of art that continues to inspire and captivate viewers.
