African Nights
SKU: CWA-061
African Nights – Oil on Canvas Dimensions: 460 mm x 600 mm x 40mm Medium: Oil A mesmerising journey into a serene and mystical landscape. This oil on canvas painting masterfully captures the enchanting atmosphere of a quiet night under a vast, star-filled sky. The composition is divided into two distinct, yet harmonious, sections. The sky, a deep and textured expanse of navy and cobalt blues, is the canvas for a luminous full moon. Its surface is thick with impasto, giving it a tangible, cratered feel, while a shower of tiny, brilliant white stars sprinkles across the darkness. Cornelie’s brushwork in the sky is energetic and expressive, creating a sense of a living, breathing night. Below this cosmic spectacle, a trio of figures walks in unison along a path. Their forms are simplified and silhouetted in warm, fiery reds and oranges, suggesting the rich glow of traditional African garb against the cool night. Each figure carries something on their head, a nod to the daily rhythm of life. Their collective journey speaks to a shared purpose and the timeless human connection to the land. The ground beneath their feet is a textured blend of gold, green, and earthy tones, with scattered blossoms of lavender and purple. This ground feels both a part of the landscape and an active participant in the scene. “African Nights” is a painting that resonates with a sense of peace and awe, a beautiful tribute to the enduring spirit of life under the expansive African sky. It’s a piece that offers a moment of quiet contemplation and visual delight. Oil on Canvas Cornelie Wolff Approaching Art from a Different Angle This Johannesburg-based artist started as a pharmacist. After completing her Honours Degree in Psychology, she joined Helios to further her skills in Art Therapy. During this time, she fell in love with art, the process and the emotional power it yields. While raising her family, which consisted of three young children, she took part-time classes with Rika de Klerk and Willie Jacobs. She also attended workshops led by Koos Bronkhorst, Niel Moss, Willie Jacobs, Rentia Coetzee, Ruth Walters, Elize Bezuidenhout, Douw van Heerden, Charla Maarschalk, and Jennifer McChristian. Today, she practices what she preaches by creating her work under the motto: “With every painting I complete, I grow as a person and an artist.” My art is created from a place of wonder – it is my dream for every human to never completely lose the child inside them, because it is our ability to see wonder and magic in things. I use bold brushstrokes, contrast and an impressionistic approach to entice the viewer to create their own interpretation of the subject and become part of my world.
